The Idea of Progress

Has there been an evolution of ideas over time?

Introduction: To introduce you to this notion, of the "idea of progress", I'm going to talk to you about two different subjects that evolve over time.

.

I) AIDS

AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease that emerged in the 1981s early 1980s .

This disease is not a disease that kills humans but it destroys the immune system, the patient will then die from any disease.

In the film Philadelphia, which was released in 1993, the main character is himself affected by this disease. And in this film we learn that at the time there were many rumors and prejudging preduices about it. The person Some people thought that AIDS could be transmitted like a bacterium, by the a handshake, by cuddles ….. but we most already knew at that time that it was transmitted only by blood or by sexual intercourse .

On top of all that, the rumor says that people were afraid of contracting AIDS in the presence of an infected person, which then resulted in discrimination against that person in many areas, as the film Philadelphia shows, the man was fired from work because of his illness.

Also at that time prejudging them said beliefs were that this disease was easily transmissible transmittable which accentuated the fear of some people not contaminating .

Nowadays, being well informed of about the disease thanks to information on the subject and correct we can say that this disease is not easily transmitted, so we are no longer afraid of this disease in our daily life.

In addition, being well informed, there is no longer any discrimination in any area targeting people with AIDS.

.

II)Homosexuality

In the movie Philadelphia we can also see an aspect of homosexuality. At that time homosexuality was a subject to be which was considered as a taboo. Homosexuality was considered a mental illness by the World Health Organization until 1990. The only times time we heard about it was to make when making jokes or to criticize criticizing homosexuals . Again this year At the time , homophobia was not prohibited by law.

Consequently, this era was a period of discrimination and where homophobia was very present, this type of person was very often insulted and ridiculed.

At that time, countries could condemn homosexual relations. Subsequently, protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation was introduced into law in 1985 and homophobic insults have been punished since 2004.

Nowadays homophobia remains present in among certain people but is punished by the law of 2004.

The population has accepted their difference and currently 22 countries have legalized the marriage of homosexual couples.

However, there are still 72 countries out of 194 which condemn homosexual relations by prison terms, forced labor or even by torture and 13 countries where homosexuality is still punishable by death.

.

In Conclusion, I can therefore say that ideas and prejudices evolve have evolved over time but not all in the same way, nor at the same speed. When we compare AIDS and homosexuality, we observe that the idea that we had of AIDS has evolved in good a positive sense and very quickly while the idea of homosexuality has evolved but has not finished evolving in d 'other country some countries .
