The « idea of progress »
I will introduce the notion « the idea of progress ». We can define, progress is as the idea that the world and the society can evolve positively in therms terms of science, technology, modernization, living conditions, etc. However, the idea of progress is still a debate between those who consider that it’s beneficial and those for whom it’s harmful. One may wonder, how is AIDS accepted in our current society compared to past years ? Fisrt First of all, we will look at it in the past. Then in our current society.
.
First of all, AIDS appeared in 1969 by in Haitian workers who came to the United States to live there. But, the first people actually affected infected were discovered later in 1981. They were most often young gay men. Following these discoveries, the scientists first thought it was a disease that only affected homosexuals, so they named this disease GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency). Then, it will be was proven that there is was no link between the disease and homosexuality, it will be was renamed AIDS. Scientists will then find found that the disease is was transmitted through blood and intercourse. The people most affected are drug addicts, prisoners, prostitutes, homosexuals, because they have less access to a forms of contraception such as condoms. Once this information is was made public, the first signs of discrimination and stigmatization will appear appeared, because many people still think thought that the virus is was transmitted by the affected infected person ==} Mais c'est vrai, c'est le cas!. One of the main associations is created to defend this cause is the AIDS association. In 1983 they will point pointed the finger at blood transfusions. Indeed several patients were contaminated in this way. Following these revelations, the American state sets set up a screening test before accepting blood samples. But one problem remains remained: the discrimination of infected people. But thanks to the actions of associations, the discrimination diminished.
.
Second Secondly, today, discrimination has largely decreased but is still a little present. The populations People have become aware of the problem. In fact a survey conducted by an American newspaper shows that 85% of Americans are well aware of this problem. Films have been made involving this problem like Bohemian Rhapsody, or Philadelphia. It shows that AIDS can affect everyone, not just homosexuals or prostitutes. In order to fight against it as much as possible, the associations continue to carry out prevention actions in schools, high schools, etc. They also distribute condoms and syringes in the streets for to drug addicts. The survey also shows that sufferers may feel ashamed of being sick. Mentalities have evolved over the years.
.
To conclude, we can see that mentalities towards AIDS have evolved a lot, but especially mentalities towards people suffering from AIDS. They are no longer as critical as when the disease was discovered.
