The flu appeared in birds about 6000 years ago, human flu was born first appeared around -2500 in China with the development of the domestication of birds, especially ducks which constitute an important reservoir of viral genes. In ancient Greece, diseases whose symptoms evoke those of human flu are known as nosos, etc.

In 1933, Christopher Andrewes, Patrick Laidlaw and Wilson Smith of the National Institute for Medical Research were the first to isolate the human influenza virus belonging to the family of Orthomyxoviridae: from samples from the throat of the throat Christopher Andrewes contaminated by the flu, they succeed succeeded in infecting the ferret, an animal sensitive to this virus and the only one animal then able to maintain in culture host the virus. In 1935, Wilson Smith shows showed that the virus can could be cultivated in embryonated chicken eggs, a technique already implemented since in 1932 with other viruses by Alice Miles Woodruff and Ernest William Goodpasture of Vanderbilt University, which opens opened the route to a vaccine 3. Joseph Stokes of the University of Pennsylvania begins began the first vaccine trials between 1936 and 1938.

In the 1940s, researchers discovered that the influenza virus, the surface of which is made up of a variety of hemagglutinins and neuraminidases, is was very heterogeneous. Advances in molecular biology make have made it possible to study its viral genome, composed of 8 segments (7 for Influenza C), which is subject to genetic drift and antigenic leaps (in) most often due to reassortments between human and animal strains.

This figure, released by the French public health agency, is an estimate because it is very difficult to attribute excess mortality to a single cause. 90% of deaths attributed to influenza concern people over the age of 75.

The flu is a virus like the others any other , it makes causes thousands of deaths per year and it should not be underestimated.
