WHAT’S REAL?

ligne 1. More than 155 reality shows have come and gone in the US. since “ Big Brother"

ligne 2. first appeared. And in both the U.S. and the UK, they have now taken over prime

ligne 3. time, the early evening hours in which the greatest number of people watch TV.

ligne 4. The most popular shows among young people are those that judge other young

ligne 5. people’s talent. Young people audition for a chance to live with other talented

ligne 6. young people. They are given training and a chance for instant fame and

ligne 7. fortune. In exchange, they give up their privacy. They let us watch them learn to

ligne 8. live with others, compete with others, and possibly have a romance. American

ligne 9. Idol, Star Academy, Fame Academy, Popstars, Loft Story - these shows

ligne 10. generate large followings among teenagers, and also generate magazine sales

ligne 11. with stories about controversial personalities, as well as music CDs and CD-

ligne 12. ROM games. The winners usually receive recording contracts. All participants

ligne 13. get publicity they otherwise would never have received. But so far, none has

ligne 14. lasted long in the public eye after the show has ended. On Fear Factor, people

ligne 15. are now voluntarily climbing into boxes full of rats, in order to “face their fears”

ligne 16. for prize money. Strangers are put together in a living situation or people have

ligne 17. to face challenges. Jackass, an MTV programme, is now in legal trouble. The

ligne 18. parents of a boy who set himself on fire trying to imitate the programme took
