"Peach Boy"

A long time ago in Japan, an old man and an old woman lived in a little house by a river. They were happy except for one thing. They didn’t have any children.

One day the old man said, “I’m going to cut down a tree for the fire”. The old woman said, “I’m going to the river to wash the clothes”.

While the old woman was washing the clothes, she saw a big peach coming down the river. The old woman thought the peach would be very good to eat so she caught it and took it home. When the old people cut the peach open, a little boy jumped out of the middle. They were happy and they called him Peach Boy.

Peach Boy was a happy child and the family lived together for many years. One day the old woman said, “Our boy is now a man”.

Some bad people lived a long way from the little town. Every year, they came and took all the money from the people. The people were very scared of them.

Peach Boy thought to himself, “I’m going to kill the bad people”. He left home with some food his mother made for him. On the way he saw a dog. The dog said, give me some food and I’ll help you kill the bad people. So he did. Next he saw a monkey and the same thing happened. Then they saw a bird. Peach Boy gave the bird some food and they all started on their way to find the bad people.

When they got there, the bad people fought hard, but the four friends were very smart and in the end, they killed them all. The friends took all the money back to the people and everyone was happy.

This is a conversation between Andrew and Joan about Adrew's son.

Andrew : Do you know that one of my son Nathan's favourite programmes is The Weakest Link.

Joan : how old is he?

Andrew : he's 8

Joan : Really does he enjoy it?

Andrew : He seems to, he's watched hundreds of episodes, but he's only managed to answer one question! he cannot remember the question but he knows the answer was « Mickey Mouse ».

Joan : (laughs) How sweet! but you know I find this a bit worrying. Should kids be allowed to watch programmes like that? I think they 're awful, don't you?

Andrew : No, 1 think they are just stupid

Joan : It's worse than that. People watch other people being humiliated.

Andrew : As long as the viewers enjoy them, 1 don't see what's wrong with them.

Joan : Come on Andrew. It's sickening, all they do in those programmes is to appeal to our instinct for voyeurism. It's like the Roman games, only you don’t have to go to, the Coliseum, you sit in your armchair…

Andrew Yes, but nobody dies in these games… Don't you think you're overreacting a little bit?

Joan No, I don't think I am, I've heard of new TV shows in the USA that are positively frightening.

Andrew : Well, so have I. A show called « Exhausted » where contestants stay awake for 24 hours before even starting the game!

Joan : Yes, exactly and they are supposed to be wide awake to compete for another 24 hours. And in the end, the winner is the one who doesn't fall asleep when he's finally allowed to sit down.

Andrew : Yes, 1 suppose it's quite worrying. Some contestants might be tempted to take drugs to win and they might endanger their health and even their lives! But 1 don't really think that The Weakest Link will get as bad as that!

Joan : Don't you?

Andrew : Well, I think I'll start checking, what my son is watching. You never know.
